Problem description

Radioisotopes are widely used in various industries, including science, industry, agriculture, but especially in medicine. Nuclear medicine is actively developing all over the world, thanks to advances in the treatment of diseases using radioactive pharmaceuticals. According to the World Atomic Energy Association (WNA), more than 40 million nuclear medicine procedures are performed worldwide each year, and the demand for radioisotopes is increasing by 5% per year. More than 80% of the radioactive isotopes produced in the world are used for medical purposes. In this regard, the issues of obtaining radioisotopes for medical use are becoming more relevant and promising for JSC NAC Kazatomprom. The company is engaged in the extraction and processing of uranium, and the industrial products of uranium production contain certain types of radioactive elements. This fact allows us to consider industrial products of uranium production as one of the possible sources for obtaining 226Ra.

Expected effect

 Analysis and determination of optimal sources of raw materials for extraction of 226Ra.  Development of an efficient and safe 226Ra extraction technology.  Creation of a laboratory facility for conducting extensive laboratory tests of 226Ra extraction technology.  Creation of a pilot plant for conducting integrated tests of 226Ra extraction technology Obtaining an experimental batch of 226Ra conforming to international standards.  Technical and economic calculation and assessment of the economic feasibility of introducing 226Ra production technology on an industrial scale.

Purpose and description of task (project)

The purpose of this research and development (R&D) is to develop a technology for producing 226Ra (the 226th isotope of radium) for medical purposes. Radium isotopes have important applications in the treatment of various forms of cancer, and can also be used in other medical procedures. The project includes a study of potential sources for the extraction of these isotopes, an assessment of their potential, and the development of an efficient production process.
